Make Your Own Pizza Party!

Posted by KissMeImVeganGuy

Everyone's favorite as a kid!  On Mondays, we'd have friends over for a pizza making event before 24 came on and Jack Bauer kicked butt.

Gone are the days of ol', ordering delivery.  No need to waste gas or a box - make your own pizza!   Gonna be fresher, quicker, and taste better! (Activate your taste buds right away, get saliva going, enzymes working - homemade gives you a head start!)

Many different sizes/ways to make your own pizza!  So much fun, so delicious, so quick, here are a few ways to DIYb (Do It Yourself, baby!):

Dough!

- Don't like getting down and dirty? There are plenty of pre-made crusts.  A quick favorite: Vicolo's Organic Cornmeal (and Spelt) Pizza Crusts.

- Use your hands!  Buy ready-made dough - we use Whole Foods' brand - and pound/roll it out for whatever size pizza you choose!  Coat your surface with a bit of flour, your baking stone or pan with a bit of cornmeal to prevent sticking, and go have fun!

- Gluten-free?  Of course!  We use Trader Joe's Brown Rice Tortillas, but there are so many out there.  Go find what works best for you!

Ingredients/Toppings!

- Little bit goes a long way!  Drizzle some extra virgin olive oil on your dough or crust.

- Get saucy!  Get your favorite tomato sauce, buy a big can of organic tomato paste and spice it up as you wish.

- Go big or go home...you're probably already home, huh?  It's your pizza, use as many toppings as you want to.  But beware: it is possible to overload and then you're in for an incredibly messy eat.  Don't bury, just load it up.  Our favorites: Start with Daiya Mozzarella and/or Cheddar Cheese, or use Follow Your Heart cheese, shredded sweet potatoes, sliced Field Roast Sausages, diced tomatoes, sliced eggplant, sliced baby bella mushrooms, seitan strips, diced Gardein Crispy Tenders, onions, peppers, fresh basil, spinach, kale, nooch (nutritional yeast, for a yummy parmesan flavor).

Bake!

Bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes for larger pizzas, 12-15 for smaller ones (Leave the last 5 minutes on broil to melt the cheese to its absolute gooeyness).

Voila!  The list is endless, the varieties go on forever.  Let everyone chip in a couple ingredients and you have an inexpensive, delicious pizza party!  Get involved and M.Y.O.P. with lots of love and scrumptious homemade goodness!

I know that normally, Fridays have been designated "Greenwala Fridays with Steve," but I was just itching to do a post myself and couldn't get it cooking till this morning. So, instead, we shall do a special "Greenwala Mondays with Steve" after the weekend. Keep an eye out for it!

And now, my reasons to smile today, of which there are many. Read on, and feel free to share your own reasons in the comments section! Cheers!

5. Cafe Gratitude, a new vegan restaurant in Los Angeles with a mission - to share delicious, wholesome, organic, and local vegan food to the masses. But that's not all folks - check out their inspiring, kiss-worth statement below. If you jive with their message, definitely check them out! I recommend ordering "I Am Warmhearted" and chasing it down with any number of their amazing milkshakes (made from CG's own homemade nut milks and ice cream!).

CafĂ© Gratitude is our expression of a world of plenty. Our food and people are a celebration of our aliveness. We select the finest organic ingredients to honor the earth and ourselves, as we are one and the same. We support local farmers, sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly products. Our food is prepared with love. We invite you to step inside and enjoy being someone that chooses: loving your life, adoring yourself, accepting the world, being generous and grateful every day, and experiencing being provided for.

 6. Yogi brand Chai Green Tea, which has totally help me overcome the need for coffee every morning. I like to add almond milk, agave, and a dash of cinnamon to mine.

7. Jenna Robino, a Los Angeles-based IntenSati instructor, who I met last week. She gives local IntenSati classes in Santa Monica and will be starting up more classes in the Los Feliz area. If you've never heard of IntenSati, check out Jenna's website here!

8. Speaking of Jenna, the morning meditation I've been doing every single day thanks to Ms. Robino. What a beautiful way to start the day!

New to meditation? No problem. Here's what I do:

Find a quiet, comfy spot and sit in a comfy position (I like to do criss cross apple sauce and keep my hands on my knees, palms facing up). Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and connect to what you hear around you. Listen to your breath. Anytime a thought hits you, let it go with a breath in and out. If a smile arises (which it very well may), let it! Keep breathing in and out fully, and when you begin to feel clear in your mind and heart, bring up an intention - it can be anything you want for your day. Right now, I've been focusing on Emotional Abundance and Financial Prosperity. I usually say and think:

Today, I seek Emotional Abundance ~ Love, Joy, and Peace in everything I do.

Today, I seek Financial Prosperity ~ enough money to live well, to give back, and to do what I love with my life.

The above is just an example - you can use it for inspiration, or come up with your own intention! End by placing your hands in prayer in between your eyes and say

Today, I am responsible for my thoughts.

and then place your hands in prayer on your heart and say

Today, I am responsible for my heart.

I will often add a few other thoughts to those mantras, and you can too. Aim to do this every morning, and see how you feel at the end of your week. I am definitely smiling because of it!

Marisa and I giving Genesis a big old KISS!
9. Getting to go to the Humane Society's annual Genesis Awards on Saturday - my first animal rights gala! Many thanks to Marisa Miller Wolfson of Vegan at Heart for including me in this fabulous weekend.

10.  "It's the action, not the fruit of the action, that's important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there will be any fruit. But that doesn't mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

What are YOUR reasons to smile today?

While I was shooting a film in upstate New York, we had some great craft services who made a specific vegetarian/vegan meal in addition to the "omnivorous" one.  The cooks weren't used to leaving meat and cheese out, or putting extra/alternative veggies in, but were excited to come up with some fun, simple vegan creations.

One fateful evening........

There was a delicious pasta in pesto sauce as the "vegetarian/vegan" option.  Admiring how creamy it looked, I received confirmation from my good friend (also vegan) that the cooks knew what wasn't supposed to be used in the veg meals and that we were good to go.  Now, it's been a year and a half since I've had cheese* (*from an animal source), but I had a strange feeling as I ate my pesto pasta.... and a little bit more of a feeling when I was done.... and some more of a feeling when most my cast mates agreed that there was cheese* in the pesto.... that there was cheese* in the pesto.  Sometimes it's all about trust, and, when you don't prepare the meal yourself (or go specifically to a vegan restaurant), you're taking a bit of a chance.

Either way, I had to come back home and make some pesto of my own!  I had to remember that I could have delicious green, creamy pesto without the use of cheese*!

And, indeed, I did!

And you can, too!  If you've never made vegan pesto before, or if you usually use some sort of cheese*, I highly recommend you try it!  Still delicious, still pesto!  Super simple!

When I make vegan pesto, I use: basil, cashews, walnuts, garlic cloves, olive oil, lemon juice, nutritional yeast, salt, and water.  In the blender/food processor.  Presto.  Vegan Pesto.  That's.  All.

Cheese?  Don't need it - you got the cashews to give creaminess and the nutritional yeast to give a nutty, parmesan-y flavor.  Course you could use vegan parmesan if you want - you can probably find shakers at your supermarket, definitely at Whole Foods or your closest health food store.  And you can add more, subsitute different ingredients if you want: pine nuts (traditional), almonds, spinach, cilantro, whatever.

Have fun, give your own twist, and enjoy all of your favorite flavors, keepin' it vegan!

Thank You! Yes, YOU!

When I started Kiss Me, I'm Vegan back in 2008, it was out of a desire to share.

So, I'm beginning a blog about my new adventures eating vegan (been doing this since the beginning of October). This has been a goal in the making for a while now- and since the holidays are nearing, I will definitely be veganizing all of my family's traditional classics- and here is the perfect place to share. There will be recipes, stories, and lots of etcs. Mostly, this will be a place where I hope people, vegan and non-vegan alike, can find a sense of connection. Whether you've been eating vegan since birth, new to veganism, or a compassionate omnivore, my hope is that you will be able to learn something new about food and life... and mostly, I'm just plain obsessed with food.

Since graduating from NYU in 2006, my life has had many twists and turns. I have had some awesome and exciting experiences, made mistakes, and learned so much. And in the midst of it all, I've made a huge realization- that I love animals very much. How I got to this point and where I will go from here is why I created this blog. I'm so freakin' excited. :)

- from my very first blog entry, "Oh Boy, What Have I Done?", November 21, 2008

A desire to share the joy I found in my newly vegan lifestyle. A desire to share my favorite recipes. A desire to share this new love I had found in wanting to help be a voice for animals.

I was not prepared for the posts about veganism that would pour out of me on the roughest of days.

Photo © Joanna Wilson Photography
I think of the billions of cows, chickens, turkeys, geese, and pigs who are forced to live a daily hell in factory farms twenty-four hours a day. I think about the baby cows who are ripped from their mothers shortly after birth so that they can both become a part of what John Robbins so appropriately calls "The Food Machine".   I think of animals that do not possess the voice or physical power to stop what is being done to them. I think about their unending pain, their fear, their loneliness and desolation. And then I think about the factory workers who have no other choice than to be a part of such an abusive system.

And when I think about all of that, it hits me. These animals need me to wake up each morning. They need my help. They need my voice. They need me. They don't need my selfishness. They don't need me to throw a pity party for myself, when they don't even so much as receive a moment to enjoy themselves.

I was not prepared for the countless reasons to smile I would find as I spent each week advocating on behalf of animals and sharing it with this community.

1) I'm getting married in seven weeks.

2) Steve is officially vegetarian. Go Steve!

3) I just registered to participate in my first Walk for Farm Animals on October 3rd!

4) Yet another vegetarian restaurant has opened up in my area. Yay!

5) My cats are all healthy and happy (and lounging in the same room as me right now).
 6) Two lovely new cookbooks have entered my life: Isa Chandra Moskowitz's Vegan Brunch and Lauren Ulm's Vegan Yum Yum. Fabulous.
7) Christmas is only three months away (which makes this Christmas baby very happy indeed).

8) I finally have time to attend a Farm Sanctuary Activist Meeting (this is a year in the making).
9) Steve's mom bought us a Cake Maker set as a wedding shower gift, complete with a decoration kit. Domesticated bliss. :)

10) I have a roof over my head, food in my kitchen, clean running water, and a whole lot of love in my life.

- from one of my many "Reasons to Smile", September 23, 2009

I was not prepared for the dozens of interviews, stories, recipes, giveaways, and guest blogs I would be sharing as well.

Veganism taught me a connection with food that did not exist before. It also got me on the path to caring about being a better person, being eco-conscious. and being the type of person who believes in making a difference in the world. It has completely shaped the person I’ve become and the one I’m continually trying to be.

- from my interview with Rory Freedman, June 18th, 2010

I was not prepared to discover the deep down love I would find for animal activism.

In the few years that I've been doing this work, I've learned this much: the goal in the life of an animal activist is not only to share the information necessary for change, but to help generously bring a person to that first step of becoming enlightened. To allow that person to experience positive change firsthand, so that they can create room for change in their own lives and in others' lives. To be willing to stand nakedly in front of people with my own personal truth and experience, so that they may glean whatever necessary buds of awareness they can from what I've learned. To be willing to make this work deeply personal and deeply felt, but to also stand rooted, calm, tall, and strong when faced with opposition. To be still and listen to the animals of this world for knowledge and inspiration. To comfort others by showing them a better way, a more loving way, of existence. To find the peace and beauty in the the budding flowers and leaves amidst the chaos of factory farming, animal abuse, and the degradation of our earth. To know this deep down truth and to still want to spread my branches. This is the challenge of the animal activist, but this is also the beautiful reward.

- from "As Tall As The Tallest Tree", October 16, 2010

I most definitely was not prepared to see 400 official supporters on the side of my blog last night. I am overfilled with so much humility, gratitude, and excitement about this little old blog's past, present, and future that I cannot contain myself. I am bliss on this beautiful Spring Forward Sunday morning in Los Angeles.

First of all, I want to say -
THANK YOU!

Thank you to each and every one of you - you have made my life, my work, and my passion for veganism a true gift. Your support, your encouragement, your comments and feedback, your love, and your loyalty to this blog, and ultimately, to compassion, inspires me in ways I can't even begin to describe.  I want to be a better blogger, a better activist, a better vegan, a better human being because of all of you. Thank you.

In honor of what I feel is one bliss-filled milestone, I've decided that I will be sharing old posts on the blog from time to time this month, both to remind myself of where, why, and how I started this blog and to also share with all of you, longtime supporters and new alike, the moments that led me to this one today.

I also value your ideas, your voices, and your stories, so please continue sharing with me all of the ways you want to contribute to the KMIV family through the comments on the blog and also by emailing me.

I will end with one of my favorite blog posts to date - a post that came to me one night when I wasn't expecting it - kind of like how veganism came to me back in 2008. May you have a beautiful, delicious, and compassionate Sunday, and even more so, may you celebrate yourselves today for being kiss-worthy activists, vegans, and vegans-to-be. You have filled my heart with more joy than I can stand, and if I could make a list of reasons to smile today, it would be filled with each and every one of your names. Thank you.

Glow.

Glow is what you have after learning to joyfully live in accordance with your values and beliefs. Glow is what I have been blissfully feeling ever since my two-year mark of veganism passed last month, and as I was cleaning a boatload of dishes and sipping some coffee tonight, it hit me. I'm really happy. And veganism is to blame.

Oh sure, I could blame this glee on a certain husband who I will be celebrating my one-year wedding anniversary with this weekend. Or I could blame it on the fact that I'm finally starting to love my animal advocacy job. But if I really take the time to think about it, living vegan is my biggest "reason to smile" lately - and for good reason too. Because of living vegan, I can finally look at any animal I pass during the day and know that I am doing all that I can to help them live a better life here. Because of living vegan, I can go to sleep each night feeling at peace with my body and mind, knowing that I'm feeding them both by acting as compassionately and positively as possible each day. Because of living vegan, I smile and laugh and swell with gratitude at this amazing gift that fell into my lap two years ago. Because of living vegan, I love more deeply, breathe more fully, and trust each and every instinct inside of me. Because of living vegan, I feel free - free to be my best self, free to be honest with what I really want in life, free to be as present as possible.

So, thank you, veganism, for helping me to shine and glow. I love you more than words can say, and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you.

xoxo,
Lindsay

Greenwala Fridays with Steve!

Recently, my hubby has secured one awesome gig - the chance to blog every single Friday for an eco-friendly, kiss-worthy website called Greenwala. A description on the website aptly reads:

Thank you for visiting Greenwala (Wala is a word used in parts of Asia that means “person”). Greenwala has been described as a company that is a Conscious Collective. We are focused on harnessing the power of a community to create opportunities for people to "Go Green" and improve their lives. Every individual has the power to foster change and we want you to help bring about the change that we are seeking in our communities both online and offline.

Pretty amazing, right? Well KissMeImVeganGuy (a.k.a Steve) has joined the ranks on Greenwala and will be guest blogging on there for a good, long time. So, I had an idea - why not combine Steve's guest blogs, Greenwala, and Kiss Me, I'm Vegan! here on the blog? And thus, Greenwala Fridays with Steve was born!

Below, enjoy Steve's Greenwala guest blog, and by all means, go check out this awesome site and become a member (it's free!). Happy Friday, beauties, and I hope you all have a compassionate, yummy, and veggie-filled weekend.

The Versatile Creamy Cashew

Everyone loves creamy, right?  Well, I know many people that do - and I'm definitely one of them.  So when I stopped consuming dairy products, the first thought to cross my mind was:  how am I going to get my creamy fix?  Ice cream?  Cream cheese?  Creamy sauces, creamy toppings?

Of course, I was able to find plenty of creamy non-dairy alternatives that proved to be both healthier and - take my word on this - even more delicious.  However, my journey got even better when I discovered something that would make all my creamy dreams come true (you know what I mean....dirty mind, you....):

The Versatile Cashew.  Soak, blend, mix - instant creamy.

First off, cashews are an excellent source of monounsaturated fat, supporting healthy levels of good cholesterol and reduced triglyceride levels for a healthy heart and body, and have lower fat content than most other nuts.  Also, while we live in a dairy-heavy country that carries some of the highest osteoporosis rates in the world, cashews provide great amounts of copper and magnesium that play an essential role is healthy, strong bones and calcium balance.  And, as you will see, they can provide all the creamy, yummy goodness that you'll ever need.  I recommend raw and organic with your cashews (beats those heavily roasted ones any day).

Basics you'll need: A blender or food processor, cashews (lots of em!), water, plus other fun goodies once you start experimenting with the world of cashews!

You take two cups of rinsed cashews, soak them overnight or for a couple of hours, rinse them well again, throw them in the blender with cold water that at least covers them (depending on how thick you want your cream).  Boom.  Cashew Cream.  And that's just the beginning.

Cashew cream can be used to top your favorite dishes, make a creamy-licious alfredo sauce, ricotta filling, or cream cheese.

SDC13628.JPG

You can start making your own cashew-based ice cream - you'll find lots of vegan/non-dairy/raw options around, with places like Lula's Sweet Apothecary in NYC and KindKreme in LA leading the way and products like Blue Mountain stealing people's hearts and taste buds.

I've included a few recipe links so you can get started immediately (and frequently!) in your journey toward ultimate non-dairy creaminess.  Go on!  Be a nut about it!  And you know what kind of nut I'm talking about.......

Have a Beautiful, Compassionate, Kiss-Worthy Day Today!

With Cowboy at Animal Acres, 2010.
It's Sunday, and, for many of us, a chance to relax and renew. What better way to celebrate life today than by doing something compassionate for the animals? Today, I'll be volunteering my time at Animal Acres, which I'm so excited about doing. Here are a few animal-friendly ideas I've dreamed up for all of you beautiful people out there...

You could:

Eat vegan for the whole day (if you're not vegan yet),

Watch an informative video (like the ones I have on the blog here),

Send a loving email to your family and friends with a link to a special animal sanctuary video, like the one below:

Plan a pot-luck party for your friends and loved ones with a vegan theme,

Meditate for a little bit about ways to help the animals this year,

Cook a vegan meal for your non-vegan friends and/or family,

Visit a farmed animal sanctuary - just google your city and state and the words "farm animal sanctuary" and see what pops up,

Pick up that animal rights book you've been meaning to read, or purchase one today,

Enter yourself into our Melanie Joy giveaway, since we've extended the deadline by a few days,

Cuddle for a while with your companion animals, look into their eyes, and promise them that you will not only honor them, but honor all animals this year,

Bake some yummy vegan cupcakes to bring to your work/school/rehearsal/meetings tomorrow,

Brainstorm a list of different ways you can be a bolder animal activist this year (and yes, by reading this blog, you are an animal-activist-in-training, so celebrate it!),

If you haven't done so yet, look for cruelty-free versions of your favorite beauty products at your local Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or online (remember to look for the bunny on the back that says "Cruelty Free"!)

Say a prayer for the abused animals of this world - that we may find better and better ways to be their voice and free them from cruelty.

And finally, you can follow the advice of my long-time hero, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau:

"Don't do nothing because you can't do everything. Do something, anything!"
